CTV: ”Video on Demand” and the Different types of VOD

There are many types of VOD, or Video on Demand when it comes to Connected TV.  It is important to understand the different types of VOD that exist, and how you can access them.

What exactly is “On Demand”?  It’s as simple as it sounds- and is basically any type of streaming video that can be streamed “on demand”, or whenever you want to play or stream the video.  There are 6 different types of VOD, or “Video On Demand.”

AVOD

AVOD stands for “Advertising Supported Video On Demand”.  This is any form of Video On Demand that is free to access, and is supported by paid advertising.  AVOD content is supported by advertising and is either free or reduced in fees with the support of advertising.  An example of this would be YouTube.

SVOD

SVOD stands for “Subscription Video On Demand.”  SVOD is a form of Video On Demand is subscription based and video content is accessed via a subscription.  Examples of this include Netflix, and Disney+.

TVOD 

TVOD stands for “Transactional Video On Demand.”  TVOD is Video On Demand is video that is available once you pay a rental fee, or make a purchase.  Some examples of this include movies that you rent of buy on iTunes or Amazon.

HVOD

HVOD stands for “Hybrid Video On Demand.”  HVOD is Video on Demand that has both AVOD and SVOD.  For example, Hulu, Disney+, and Netflix offer both a Subscription based model and an ad-supported model.

PVOD

PVOD stands for “Premium Video On Demand.”  PVOD is Video on Demand that is considered Premium, and typically is purchased as a high price point due to its exclusivity.  For example, Universal released “Super Mario Bros Movie”  via PVOD a little over a month after its theatrical release.

BVOD

BVOD stands for “Broadcast Video On Demand.”  BVOD is Video on Demand that accesses content from traditional TV Broadcasters such as CBS, NBC, and ABC.

As the Connected TV Landscape continues to evolve, there are more options that ever to stream TV video on demand.
